2012-13 Garden Schedule



El Morro Garden Club: 2012-2013

The El Morro Garden Club will meet Monday from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Students will be served a wholesome snack before beginning. They will break into two groups and alternate between working in the garden (planting, weeding, harvesting) and completing a garden-themed lesson plan that meets state standards (math, science, reading, writing, creative arts), as well as environmental education.



Oct-Nov: Session One (9/24- 11/15)

Week One: Plant Growth
            Introduction: Name Tags, Rules, Tools, Aprons, Who Are You?
Lesson: Parts of a Plant Picnic
Gardening: Plant lettuce, cabbage, broccoli; weed in and around boxes

Week Two: Soils and Water
Lesson: Mud Pies
Gardening: Plant more herbs: Basil, thyme, oregano, dill, cilantro

Week Three: Ecology, Environmental Horticulture
Lesson: Nature Class Web
Gardening: Plant kale, swiss chard, carrots, radishes

Week Four: Insects and Diseases
Lesson: Insect Symmetry
Gardening: Plant Cauliflower, Peas, Turnips.

Week Five: Landscape and Horticulture
Lesson: Site Map
Gardening: Weed as needed. Make garden signs.

Week Six: Fruits and Nuts
Lesson: Botanical Wood Prints
Gardening: Harvest lettuce, carrots radishes to make salad. 

Week Seven: Vegetable and Herbs
Lesson: Make Your Pick
Gardening: Harvest broccoli, cabbage, swiss chard, kale to make take-home stir fry. 

Week Eight: Life Skills and Career Exploration
Lesson: How Would You Feel?
Gardening: Make herb bundles to take home. 


Jan-Feb: Session Two (1/14- 3/14)

Week One: Plant Growth
Introduction: Name Tags, Rules, Tools, Aprons, Know Your Friends
Lesson: Touch and Tell
Gardening: Harvest lettuce, cabbage; Plant beets, peas, celery; weed in and around boxes.

Week Two: Soils and Water
Lesson: Build a compost bin
Gardening: Hang herbs to dry

Week Three: Ecology, Environmental Horticulture
Lesson: Vermicomposting
Gardening: Harvest cauliflower, Peas, Turnips.

Week Four: Insects and Diseases
Lesson: Secret Smells Game
Gardening: Paint tiles to decorate boxes. Weed as needed.

Week Five: Landscape and Horticulture
Lesson: Color Wheel
Gardening: Explore various textures in the garden. What should we add?

Week Six: Fruits and Nuts
Lesson: Apple-ing Appearance
Gardening: Plant carrots and radishes. Harvest lettuce, kale, swiss chard. 

Week Seven: Vegetable and Herbs
Lesson: Paper Towel/Square Foot Gardening
Gardening: Harvest peas, cauliflower and broccoli. Make herb bath salts.

Week Eight: Life Skills and Career Exploration
Lesson: Over and Under
Gardening: Harvest rest of winter produce. Clear beds for spring planting.

April-May: Session Three (4/8- 5/16)

Week One: Plant Growth
            Introduction: Name Tags, Rules, Tools, Aprons, Who’s On Our Team?
Lesson: Plant People
Gardening: Plant a Pizza Garden: Tomatoes, Onions, Basil, Peppers; weed in and around boxes. Make signs for pizza garden.

Week Two: Soils and Water
Lesson: Water Cycle (Water District)
Gardening: Plant cucumbers, squash, corn.

Week Three: Ecology, Environmental Horticulture
Lesson: Nature Masks (Library); Have librarian read a book
Gardening: Plant cantaloupe, peppers, tomatoes.

Week Four: Insects and Diseases
Lesson: The Great Cover Up
Gardening: Plant watermelon, pumpkins, radish, sunflowers.

Week Five: Landscape and Horticulture
Lesson: Tearing Trees
Gardening: Plant peppers, beans, peas, lettuce, marigolds.

Week Six: Fruits and Nuts
Lesson: Fruit Frenzy
Gardening: Harvest radish and lettuce. Weed as needed.

Week Seven: Vegetable and Herbs
Lesson: Food Pyramid
Gardening: Clean garden shed and tools.

Week Eight: Life Skills and Career Exploration
